Friends of the Earth is running a conference to support local communities fighting against mining and quarrying.

Background

Quarrying, peat extraction and mining have been a feature of the Northern Ireland landscape for years. Recently, though, there has been a rapid increase in these activities.

Now major global corporations are showing an interest in our rare and valuable resources – from precious metals in the Sperrins, to fossil fuels in Antrim, and sand from Lough Neagh.

This all happens in the context of systemic failure of environmental law - retrospective planning is common and enforcement is weak.

Our Earth, Our Future

The conference will explore the economic and social impacts of these industries and alternatives to extractive projects – such as eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture and the circular economy.

The conference is of special interest to communities, local activists, and decision makers.

International speakers will explore the economic and social impacts of these industries.
